2022 Batavia Muckdogs: A Season to Remember

They say in life that the road to where you want to go is never straight. This season the Batavia Muckdogs accomplished something they have not done since joining the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) back in 2021, they won a division championship.

The 2022 campaign has been a banner one for your Batavia Muckdogs, but they have had to overcome numerous obstacles. Player departures and frustrating losing streaks have slowed them down, but the division champs are feeling good and looking to make a run at the PGCBL Title. The Muckdogs started off hot and burst right out of the gate, starting 10-2 on the year. Throughout the season the team stuck together and rallied behind Manager Joey "Skip" Martinez. The Muckdogs continued to display their trademark resiliency as the season concluded, winning 5 of their last 6 to close out the year and finish with a record of 30-15. Amid this hot stretch the Muckdogs clinched the #1 Seed in the West Division for the first time as members of the PGCBL and look to stay hot heading into round one of the West Division Playoffs.

REGULAR SEASON FINALE:

It is only fitting that the 9-6 regular season finale win over the Elmira Pioneers featured a little bit of everything that has made this Muckdog team so prolific. Batavia had to battle back from an early 2-0 deficit, but they showed off their elite offense and shutdown defense. The depth and firepower found throughout this team is a credit to the recruiting of Manager Joey "Skip" Martinez. The Muckdogs quickly answered back, as Kyle Corso cleared the bases with a three RBI double to give the Muckdogs a 3-2 lead after 3 innings of play. The Muckdogs then scored 4 runs over the next two innings of play and never surrendered the lead for the rest of the game. Joe Tobia came in at the top of the 4th for starter Ryan Kinney and picked up the win. Batavia's pitching staff combined for 5 strikeouts, giving up 6 runs on 7 hits.

Now that the regular season has concluded, the real work begins. The playoffs are just around the corner, with round one starting on Sunday at 4:05 PM. The Muckdogs are amped up just as much as the Batavia faithful. Second year pitcher Julian Pichardo is already anticipating a great atmosphere when the playoffs kick off on Sunday. “Sunday is going to be electric, the stands are going to be packed, people everywhere, amazing turnout, I know it.”

With the regular season now complete, the Muckdogs will take on the Elmira Pioneers in round one of the PGCBL West Division Playoffs. With the time set for Sunday July 31st, at 4:05 PM, the Dogs look to survive and advance through their first encounter with the PGCBL playoffs.
